Applicant Demographic Survey

We are committed to equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging at Simon Fraser University. This survey was developed to support academic units conducting limited or preferential hiring to collect applicants' demographic information. 

Completing the survey is voluntary, but doing so will help us meet our equity, diversity, and inclusion commitments elaborated below.

Pursuant to Section 27(2) of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, collection notices are required on all SFU forms that collect personal information from students, faculty, staff, clients and members of the general public. The following is a notice approved by SFU's Office of the General Counsel:

Collection Notice: 

Interim Applicant Demographic Survey collects personal information on behalf of SFU under the authority of the University Act (RSBC 1996, c.468) and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (RSBC 1996, c.165). The personal information collected includes the following:

- your name,
- demographic characteristics, specifically, Indigenous identity, racial identity, gender identity, sexual orientation,  and disability,
- prospective job title,
- department applied to, and
- prospective school or faculty.

The above information is related directly to and needed by the University to support academic units tracking potential job applicants who identify as racialized or part of a visible minority group in keeping with the University’s intention of hiring a number of racialized faculty members, to meet our obligations under SFU’s Employment Equity Policy (GP19), action commitments in SFU’s Equity Compass, identify and remove systemic barriers to recruitment and hiring, and enhance equity, diversity, and inclusion in hiring faculty. The information will be used in conjunction with your work experience, and qualifications in order to determine your appropriateness for the advertised position.

The above information will also be used to improve the planning and evaluation of hiring and appointment practices in the University.

Additionally, in completing the application survey, you consent to the use of the provided survey data in future longitudinal research studies designed to improve the University’s hiring and appointment practices. Further, the above listed information may be used and/or disclosed for policy analysis, research and/or program evaluation purposes. However, individual names and the subject hiring departments will not be disclosed for the aforementioned purposes.

The Equity Office at Simon Fraser University is responsible for conducting this survey. We will only share your response related to the designated group specified in the job search with the Search Committee, and that too only if you give your explicit permission. Any additional demographic information you provide will be kept confidential and will not be disclosed to the Search Committee. Instead, these responses will be utilized solely for the purposes of policy analysis, research, and/or program evaluation.
