NILLA stands for NEȾOLṈEW̱ Indigenous Language Learning Atlas. NEȾOLṈEW̱ is a SENĆOŦEN word, meaning 'one mind, one people'. This word was shared with us to acknowledge that our work is based from within the unceded territories of the W̱SÁNEĆ and Lekwungen people, and also reflects the spirit of our shared work and collaborative approach.

We are a collective of nine Indigenous community Partners along with Indigenous scholars working together on a national research project to understand better what helps language learners – and especially adult learners – be successful in becoming new speakers of their language.

NILLA offers an online space for Indigenous communities, advocates, researchers, and allies to engage and exchange knowledge, to share their own and learn about others’ successful language learning strategies within and across Canada.

We invite you to participate and help other communities who are trying to strengthen their language. Please only share with us information you are comfortable sharing publicly.

To learn more about NEȾOLṈEW̱ or NILLA before you share your information with us, please contact nilla@uvic.ca.
