Artists-in-Residence Project | Office of Indigenous Education | Faculty of Education | SFU

We are honoured to walk with master weaver, qʷənat Angela Paul from the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh and Sts’ailes Nations and Aaron “Splash” Nelson-Moody, woodcarver from Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Nation, as they provide meaningful and transformative educational experiences for students and in-service teachers to learn and gain a deep understanding of cultural, traditional, and contemporary Indigenous arts practices.

The two artists are working collaboratively on a project that will honour living Indigenous practices of carving and weaving. Splash will be carving two sets of traditional weaving tools and looms; one set will be specifically designed for Angela for weaving and the other set will be gifted to SFU to be used by students, staff, and faculty.
Instructors can book a 1-hour time slot for up to 30 students. The maximum group size is 15, so classes will have two 30-minute visits for up to 15 students at a time. We recommend that instructors prepare a 30-minute complementary activity that will support deeper learning for students during the time while they are not observing the artists. A classroom in EDB will be available for the hour and teaching resources related to the Artists-in-Residence program are linked to the website https://www.sfu.ca/education/indigeneity/air.html
