Before you begin, ensure you have all the necessary materials to complete the application. Once you exit the survey, your application is submitted as is. If you are not finished completing the information and leave the SurveyMonkey application, you will not be able to return to where you left off and your application will be considered incomplete. Incomplete applications will be considered ineligible and will not be considered in the competition.

An applicant must be recommended by their supervisor or the Graduate Chair of their department. The recommendation information is now collected online. Please send your supervisor or Graduate Chair the link for the Recommendation form. Once we receive it, we will match it with your completed ESL bursary application.

Note: both the student's application and the Supervisor/Graduate Chair recommendation form must be submitted by the deadline below.

The English as a Second Language (ESL) Bursary is offered by the College of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies (CGPS) as a support program for international graduate students who would like to strengthen their English skills by taking a course offered through the Language Centre. Please note that this bursary is available only to students currently registered in a graduate program at the University of Saskatchewan.

The deadline for application submission is the first Monday in April at 4:30 pm CST annually.

ESL bursaries are available for the following courses only:
  • Developing Advanced Academic Speaking Skills
  • Developing Advanced Writing Skills for Academic Success (essay and general writing)
  • Developing Writing Skills for Graduate Students (research paper emphasis)
There are two eligibility criteria used in awarding a student an ESL bursary:
  • The applicant must have met the minimum English proficiency requirements at the University of Saskatchewan (applicant cannot have conditional holds on their admission due to language requirements).
  • The applicant’s graduate supervisor or Graduate Chair must recommend the applicant for an ESL class.
As well, the recipient of an ESL bursary must be registered as a full-time international graduate student in good standing at the University of Saskatchewan in a degree program to hold the bursary.

There are a limited number of bursaries available for students. If there are more eligible students than the number of bursaries available, priority will be given to PhD students and to those students who have not received a bursary in a previous term.

Note: ESL bursaries are not intended to be used by students who have been admitted conditionally and must satisfy a language requirement or who have taken the English for Academic Purposes courses. As well, these bursaries will not be awarded to students who were exempted from the language requirements upon admission to the university.
