Description: Researchers and research communicators can face hostility, abuse, and even threats when they try to reach audiences online. Encounters with anti-social online behavior have become more frequent since the pandemic began, and have prompted many individuals and organizations to wonder what can be done.

This 90-minute workshop on Zoom is for researchers and research communicators. Participants will have the opportunity to share their concerns and experiences when working in an environment increasingly characterized by trolling, abuse, harassment and misinformation. We will discuss techniques and tools to reduce or respond to anti-social behavior, and support mechanisms for individuals who must deal with it.

The workshop will be led by four experts whose work has focused on these issues:
  • Anatoliy Gruzd, Canada Research Chair in Privacy Preserving Digital Technologies, Toronto Metropolitan University
  • Jaigris Hodson, Canada Research Chair in Digital Communication for the Public Interest, Royal Roads University.
  • Chris Tenove, Interim Director in the Centre for the Study of Democratic Institutions, University of British Columbia
  • Victoria O’Meara, PhD, Postdoctoral Researcher and co-Founder of the Digital Public Interest Collective
