Project Title: Autistic Adults’ Reflections on Their Elementary School Experiences (H97)

Purpose(s) and Objective(s) of the Research:

The primary purpose of the research is to train the student researcher in the methods of behavioural research. Additionally, this research seeks to retrospectively explore the school experience and social well-being of elementary-aged autistic children. 

Procedures:
  • Should you choose to participate, you will be presented with a number of brief questionnaires relating to your overall school experience in elementary school, your social well-being in elementary school, the centrality of an event from that time period, and some demographic questions. All measures may be completed online at the time and place of your choosing. The study should take approximately 15 minutes of your time.
  • Please feel free to ask any questions regarding the procedures and goals of the study or your role.
 Potential Risks:
  • There are no known or anticipated risks to you by participating in this research, however, if any part of your participation in this study has made you feel uncomfortable, distressed, or upset, you are encouraged to contact Autism Canada at 1-800-983-1795 (Toll-Free) for mental health services in your area, or Help Phone at 1-800-668-6868 (Toll-Free) for assistance 24 hours a day, seven days a week. 
  • Please note that you may answer only those questions that you are comfortable with.
  • At the end of the study, you will be presented with a document that better explains the nature of the study and you will once again be provided with the researcher’s contact information should you have any concerns or wish to ask any further questions.
Compensation:
  • Once you have completed the study, you may enter a draw to win your choice of one of three $50 Amazon or iTunes gift cards.
  • If you are participating through the Department of Psychology and Health Studies’ Participant Pool, you will receive one bonus mark in an eligible course for approximately 30 minutes of research participation.  
Confidentiality:
  • Your data will be kept completely confidential and no personally identifying information will be linked to your data. Data will be coded using arbitrary participant numbers that will not be associated with any names or personally identifying information. All data will be summarized in aggregate form.
  • Should you choose to contact either the researcher or research supervisor, your confidentiality will remain protected, and all email correspondence will be stored securely once a reply has been sent.
  • It is also important for you to know that SurveyMonkey, a web survey company located in the USA, is the host of this online research. All survey information will be collected, retained, and hosted on a third-party server and not on a University of Saskatchewan server. Your data will be stored in facilities hosted in Canada. Your information is subject to SurveyMonkey’s Privacy Policy.
Right to Withdraw: 
  • Your participation is voluntary, and you can answer only those questions that you are comfortable with. You may withdraw from the research project for any reason, at any time without explanation or penalty of any sort.
  • If you are participating via the Department of Psychology and Health Studies' Participant Pool, you may withdraw at any time without risk of losing any promised course credit.
  • Once you have submitted your data by clicking the submit button at the end of the study, it will not be possible to withdraw your data.
