Reporting to Simon Fraser University's (SFU) Vice-President Research and International (VPRI), the Associate Vice-President Knowledge Mobilization and Innovation (AVPKMI) is a full-time leadership role that supports the priorities and objectives of the VPRI, including implementation of SFU's Strategic Research Plan (SRP). 

The AVPKMI will provide strategic oversight, leadership and will champion initiatives (e.g. SFU Innovates, Community-Engaged Research), support services (e.g. Technology Licensing Office, SFU VentureLabs), and policies (e.g. IP policy) which seek to mobilize knowledge created by SFU faculty and students. The role will seek and respond to opportunities, such as institutional-level funding proposals and strategic partnerships with industry, government and community organizations. The ideal candidate will hold a tenured position at SFU, be an experienced academic leader with research expertise in the area of knowledge mobilization, innovation or entrepreneurship and/or substantial administrative leadership experience of related initiatives. 
 
Specific accountabilities: 
  • Supports the VPRI in strategic planning and implementing knowledge mobilization and innovation priorities set out in the SRP.
  • Provides leadership and oversight for university knowledge mobilization and innovation initiatives that may include research, experiential learning, training and mentoring. 
  • Strategic oversight of Knowledge Mobilization, SFU Innovates, Technology Licensing Office, SFU VentureLabs, and the Community-Engaged Research initiative (CERi). 
  • Oversight of the development of university-led major grant submissions related to knowledge mobilization and innovation.  
  • Represents SFU at innovation events and on the Board of Directors of key innovation intermediaries, regionally and nationally. 
  • Meets with innovation policymakers and government representatives provincially and nationally, advocating for SFU’s initiatives supporting research-based innovation. 
  • Responsible for developing and tracking key quantitative and qualitative metrics related to knowledge mobilization and innovation productivity and impact. 
  • Advocates for faculty and students in reducing barriers to creativity and innovation. 
  • Represents the VPRI at some events or engagements. 
  • Serves on a number of university and external committees. 
  • Supervises staff in various VPRI departments.
