WHO IS DOING THE RESEARCH?
The principal investigator for this study is Dr. Rachel Weldrick, postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Gerontology at Simon Fraser University. Dr. Atiya Mahmood (Associate Professor in the Department of Gerontology) and Dr. Sarah Canham (Adjunct Professor in the Department of Gerontology) are co-investigators.

WHAT IS THE RESEARCH ABOUT?
The purpose of this study is to understand the experiences of people who have recently attended a Community Conversations event. The goal is to gather feedback from event attendees to determine the perceived benefits of these events, and what could be done differently in the future. This information will be gathered via a brief survey about your experiences at this event.

WHAT WILL STUDY PARTICIPATION INVOLVE?
If you agree to participate, you will be invited to take part in a brief survey. The survey contains both open-ended and closed-ended questions, as well as one demographic question. We anticipate that the survey will take between 5 and 10 minutes to complete, although the length of time depends on the responses you choose to provide.

You do not need to write about any issues you do not feel comfortable sharing with the researchers. If you wish to withdraw from the study, you may do so at any time before submitting the survey without having to give a reason. You will not be able to withdraw from the study once you have submitted your completed survey. This is because once a completed survey if received, there will be nothing linking you to your responses. There will be no negative consequences to you or anyone else if you choose to withdraw before submitted the survey.

This study will not subject you to any physical risk. There is minimal social risk involved in participation given that the survey will be completed following a public event. Although we do not expect any psychological risks, you may skip any questions on the survey that you do not feel comfortable answering.

WHO IS FUNDING THIS RESEARCH?
This project is funded by Simon Fraser University’s Community Engagement Initiative.

WHAT WILL BE DONE WITH THE INFORMATION I PROVIDE?
All survey responses will be stored in a secure location that is only accessible to the research team for analysis. All survey data will be fully anonymous, meaning that no personal information will be collected from you or stored. All survey data will be password protected. The information collected will be written up for publication in scholarly journals, lay publications, and presented at academic conferences. At the end of the study, all paper surveys will be securely shredded, and all digital study files will be securely destroyed. No raw data or study files will be kept beyond five years.
WHAT IF I WISH TO WITHDRAW FROM THE STUDY?
Your participation in the study is entirely voluntary. You may refuse to answer any question by leaving it blank. You can withdraw from the study at any time before submitting the survey without giving a reason and without penalty. Once you submit the survey, you will no longer be able to withdraw your responses, as your answers will become one of many received from diverse participants.

WHO CAN I CONTACT IF I HAVE COMPLAINTS OR CONCERNS ABOUT THE STUDY?
If you have any concerns about your rights as a research participant and/or your experiences while participating in this study, please contact the Director, SFU Office of Research Ethics, at dore@sfu.ca or 778-782-6593.

HOW WILL THE RESEARCH BE USEFUL?
The findings from this study will further our understanding of how free and publicly accessible events might be used as tools to discuss and learn about discrimination and homelessness among older people. Survey findings will be shared with community members, researchers, and other professionals working in this area with the aim of informing future efforts and events.

HOW CAN I LEARN ABOUT STUDY FINDINGS?
A summary of study findings will be posted on the Aging in the Right Place (AIRP) Partnership website: www.sfu.ca/airp.html. Please check back in the coming months for updates to this page.
If you would like more information about this study, please contact Rachel Weldrick at rachel_weldrick@sfu.ca
