Welcome

This project is at an exciting stage (Round 2) of the West Bay Connector Trail preliminary design, and the project team wants to hear your thoughts!

Preferred Trail Alignment

The City of Salmon Arm, Neskonlith Community (Switsemalph No. 3), and Adams Lake Community (Switsemalph No. 6 and 7) are excited to share the proposed preliminary vision for the West Bay Connector Trail. This trail is intended to connect communities and provide a safe alternative to relying on access via Highway 1, CPKC Railway, Shuswap Lake waterfront, over creeks, and sensitive environmental and cultural areas.

The following image illustrates the preferred trail location developed with input from the West Bay Connector Trail Technical Committee, Neskonlith and Adams Lake Communities, City of Salmon Arm, and the technical members of the Project Team. When completed, the proposed 6.5 km trail will extend:
  • from the existing Salmon Arm Wharf boardwalk through Neskonlith and Adams Lake communities
  • to the northern edge of the Adams Lake community (Switsemalph No. 6), ending near Pierres Point Road (50 Avenue NW).
The preliminary design intends to honour and incorporate Neskonlith and Adams Lake traditional knowledge and connection to the land with technical insight, including heritage/archeological, environmental, engagement, trail design, landscape, active transportation, structural engineering, and safety.

The Project Process

Engagement planning, initial technical evaluations and site reviews were completed throughout the fall of 2024. In September and December, the project team met with Elders, knowledge sharers, and community representatives from Neskonlith and Adams Lake as well other interested parties to understand known constraints within the designated trail corridor.

The information gathered during engagement (September - December 2024) combined with technical assessments (i.e., environmental, archaeological), and engineering reviews have helped to inform the project team on identifying the preferred preliminary trail location and features of the proposed trail to create a draft design.

We are now in Round 2 of engagement and excited to share the preferred location of the proposed trail and feature options to the overall communities. The outcomes from our community engagement events and the fieldwork performed and in-progress (i.e., archaeology) is being utilized to inform the preliminary trail design which will be presented to the communities of Salmon Arm, Neskonlith and Adams Lake in the early spring of 2025.
