Project Overview

Project Title: Data Repository Investment Value & Relevance (DRIVR)
Funded by: Digital Research Alliance of Canada
Due Date: Please complete this survey by March 12, 2025

Purpose and Objectives of the Research: The World Data System (WDS) and its Scientific Committee are launching a study to identify the value-added benefits of data repositories, in order to address the WDS Action Plan Objective #2 to advance value narratives for WDS members. The ultimate goal of this project is to demonstrate the value of repositories in serving needs of researchers, funders, policy-makers and other stakeholders. To this end, we chose the Delphi Study method to identify the top 10 value-added benefits that data repositories provide to the international research ecosystem, now and into the next decade.

Importance of Research: Repositories, an essential element of the scientific enterprise, must demonstrate continued relevance to the research communities they serve. As such, repositories are expected to keep pace with technology advances and research data management practices. The seamlessness of well-managed repository services leaves the impression that the underlying effort is minimal or automated, although in reality ongoing maintenance and operations require significant resources. Insufficient funding leads to stagnation, leaving the repository holdings vulnerable; thus continual investment by funders is necessary to sustain and enhance repository services.
The WDS, in response to members’ concerns about funding and sustainability, is launching this study to demonstrate data repository value-added benefits. The findings may be used to develop narratives for the purposes of communications, funding and sustainability of data repositories.

Research Team: The research team is comprised of World Data System – International Technology Office (WDS-ITO) staff and WDS Scientific Committee members.

Participation: Individuals that identify as one of the target groups (funders, publishers, researchers, policy makers, and digital infrastructure/service providers) are asked to participate as key stakeholders of data repositories. Participation in this project is entirely voluntary.
