The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at UVic offers pretests in order to give students meeting certain criteria the chance to enroll in:

Math 109 - Introduction to Calculus
Math 100 - Calculus I
Math 102 - Calculus for Students in the Social and Biological Sciences

The following are the circumstances under which pretests are given:

Any student for whom Admissions has not been able to assess equivalence of high school mathematics prerequisites can gain admission to one of the above classes by writing and passing a pretest. Except as noted below for Math 100, Math 109 and Math 102, pretests are not available to students whose mathematics prerequisites have been assessed as being less than the required standard.

No pretest can be written more than once. Any student who does not pass a pretest must take an appropriate upgrading class: for Math 100, 109 or 102 students should take Math 120.

Students who have transferred to the University of Victoria from a college or university should check whether their high school mathematics prerequisites have been assessed by Admissions and been input into the Records system. This can be done on MyPage by choosing Student Services in the left navigation bar, then the Grades and Records tab , and finally the Transfer Credit Summary tab. Prerequisite errors are frequently the result of missing information.

In addition, for Math 100 and Math 109, students who have completed BC Principles of Math 12, Precalculus 12, or a course elsewhere deemed equivalent by Admissions, with a letter grade of less than B can gain admission by writing and passing the pretest. In BC high schools a B corresponds to a numerical score of at least 73%; the translation is different for other jurisdictions, and is known to Admissions. For Math 102, students with a grade of less than D in Math 120, can gain admission to Math 102 by writing and passing the pretest.

Students with a minimum grade of C+ in UVic Math 120, or a C+ in a course that transfers to UVic as Math 120, have the prerequisite for Math 100 and do not need to write the pretest but may need to contact mssli2@uvic.ca for a prerequisite waiver.

The next pretests will be online through WebWorK in August and September 2024 on the following days:

Monday August 26, 2024
Tuesday September 3, 2024
Monday September 9, 2024

You may write pretests for more than one course. The pretest for Math 100 and Math 109 are the same pretest. Separate registration is required for each pretest you are interested in writing. Please register below:
